The
Wörthersee Stadium
in Austria was proposed as one of the eight
UEFA Euro 2008
venues by Carinthia. It hosted three Euro 2008 group matches. The original Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt, which was built in 1960, was recently upgraded into the multi-functional Hypo Arena to accommodate Euro 2008 fixtures.
In 2002, the construction plans for the new sports park were underway and Albert Wimmer was appointed as the architect for the project. The design was modelled on
St. Jakob-Park Stadium
, in Basel, Switzerland. In 2005, the old sporting arena with a capacity of 10,900 was demolished. The new building, the Hypo Arena, was built at a construction cost of 66.5 million Euros and boasts 32,000 covered seats for football fans. The encased stadium possesses a modern floodlighting system and also features a shopping mall, business facilities and a hotel.
The Hypo Arena, formally named the Hypo Group Arena, was officially opened on 7 September 2007 when the Japan and Austria national football teams faced each other in a
friendly football match
. A crowd of 26,500 supporters attended the event.
After the UEFA Euro 2008 fixtures have concluded, the Hypo Arena capacity will be reduced to 12,500.
Wörthersee Stadium (Wörtherseestadion) is currently the home ground to
SK Austria Kärnten
, a football club that has participated in the Austrian ‘T-Mobile’ Bundesliga since 2002.

Klagenfurt is located in the intersection between two freeways: A2 and S37. Unfortunately, the Klagenfurt public transport system is rather under-developed. The fastest and easiest way to travel to the stadium is by car, although rush hour traffic jams in Klagenfurt are quite common.
