Euro Cup 2008 Trophy

The prize eagerly sought after by the 52 national teams competing in the UEFA Euro 2008 is the Henri Delaunay UEFA Euro Cup 2008 Trophy, which may be kept by the winning team for until the next tournament commences in four years.

The name is a tribute to the man who conceived the notion of a European national team tournament and built the foundation for the European Football Championship. Sadly, Delaunay passed away in November 1955 and was unable to see the fruits of his labour. The first UEFA competition kicked off in 1960 and was played in France to honour his memory.

Henri Delaunay’s son, Pierre Delaunay, consequently filled his father’s place as the head of UEFA and was placed in charge of producing the Henri Delaunay Trophy. Arthus Bertrand was chosen as the designer for the trophy, which was created in 1960. Visit our history page for more information regarding the origins of UEFA.
