The
Stade de Suisse
Wankdorf was one of four venues across Switzerland that hosted the
UEFA Euro 2008
Football Championship.
The original sporting ground (Wankdorf Stadium) was the venue for many domestic and international football fixtures including the historic final match of the 1954 FIFA World Cup. It was demolished in 2001 and replaced with Stade de Suisse Wankdorf at the cost of 350 Million Euros. The architect assigned to the project was Marazzi Generalunternehmung.
The new multi-functional stadium officially opened on 30 July 2005 and has since been the home stadium for BSC Young Boys who play in the Swiss Super League. The stadium has also featured ice hockey and other sporting events.
Stade de Suisse Wankdorf features 32,000 covered seats for football matches. The stadium also boasts advanced solar power panels mounted on the roof. A shopping mall, a public school, various restaurants, offices and apartment buildings can be found in the vicinity of the stadium.
In 2005, one red seat was installed between the red and black seats in the new stadium. It is not possible to purchase tickets for this seat and it is mostly reserved for an honoured guest with links to BSC Young Boys. Aside from the Euro 2008 games the stadium has also been used by the FC Thun during three
Champions League Matches
as well as for one
UEFA Cup Match
.
