The Spanish team played and won their first home international fixture in Bilbao, with a 2 -1 victory over Belgium in 1921.
The highlight for the national team, often dubbed La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) or La Seleccion, was undoubtedly winning the trophy at the 1964 European Championship on home ground. Although the UEFA European Championship odds heavily favoured Hungary, Spain eliminated them in the semi-final round. The final match was played on home soil at Bernabéu before a crowd of 125,000. Spain defeated USSR (2 – 1) to become European Champions for the first time.Other noteworthy achievements in the history of the Spanish team include earning a gold medal on home territory at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
