Euro 2008 Qualifying

The Euro 2008 qualifying round started in September 2006 and ends on 21 November 2007.

Euro 2008 qualifying matches see seeded teams in each of seven groups battle it out to determine who will go on to play in the Euro 2008 final tournament. By default, the reigning European champions are seeded. Other teams are seeded based on their results in the qualifying competition of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and of the 2002/04 UEFA European Football Championship.

Group A includes eight nation’s teams, and groups B to G each include seven teams. Of the total of 50 teams, only the top 14 will progress to the Euro 2008 First Round matches. As host countries, Switzerland and Austria are exempt from qualifying – bringing the total number of teams that compete in the final tournament to 16.

In Euro 2008 qualifying, points are calculated in the following way:

  • number of matches played divided by points determines each team’s ranking
  • three points are awarded for a win
  • teams that tie a game are allocated one point each
  • no points are granted for a defeat
