Spain secured a place in the Euro 2008 final last night, after demolishing the Russian defence in a dramatic scoring spree during the second Euro 2008 semi-final.
The teams looked equally matched in the first half, with Spain creating some good opportunities on goal, while Russia threatened repeatedly with breakaway attacks against the run of play. The teams went into the second half with the score level and the match wide open.
However, it didn’t take Spain long to score in the second half. After battering away at the Russian defence for several minutes, a brilliant sequence of attacking play saw Spain’s Xavi Hernandez score of a great cross, toeing the ball past the Russian keeper.
With a goal on the board, the floodgates opened, and Spain scored twice more in the second half. Neither of the goals came from established scorers, with Guiza and Silva scoring on 73 and 82 minutes respectively.
There were no last minute reprieves for the Russians at 3-0 down, and the side looked sluggish in the final minutes of the game. Spain’s performance will have struck fear into the hearts of German fans as they take on a hungry Spanish side participating in their first European Championship final since 1984.
