Letzigrund Stadium Zurich Switzerland

The new Letzigrund was inaugurated on 30 August 2007 and served as one of the eight UEFA Euro 2008 Stadiums.

The original Letzigrund Stadium opened on 22 February 1925 and has been renovated many times over the years. Floodlights were installed in 1973 and the sports ground was extensively refurbished in 1984.

Letzigrund Stadium is not just used for football matches. The grounds contain an athletics track with eight lanes and an enclosed training area. The arena is also used to host music concerts, the first one being an open air show in 1996.

Letzigrund Stadium is the home ground to FC Zurich. On 23 September 2007, the team played in the debut football fixture at the new UEFA Euro 2008 Stadium. FC Zurich supporters watched as their team was pitted against another local club, Grasshopper Club Zurich football team. UEFA Cup Matches have also been held at the venue.

The construction of the enhanced UEFA Euro 2008 Stadium cost in the region of 116 million Swiss Francs. The updated structure boasts a seating capacity of over 30,000. The contemporary architecture is designed to be unobtrusive and environmentally friendly. The stadium roof, which is elevated a mere 16m above street level, is covered with flora.

Other Letzigrund Stadium features and facilities include:

    * A pair of 52 meter high square video screens
    * Separately placed lighting fixtures that can be manoeuvred to present the shape of a flower
    * A sheltered walkway leading up to the Letzigrund Stadium restaurant
