Founded: 1246

Klagenfurt is reputed to have first been established after a mythic battle between a hero and a dragon resulted in the dragon’s death and a safe environment for settlement. Officially the city was founded in 1246, when a vulnerable settlement on the valley’s flood plane was relocated and rebuilt by the Count of Carinthia.

Like many other European cities, Klagenfurt has a long history of being caught up in the continent’s conflicts. The city was a target for Napoleon’s armies, who destroyed the city walls, and in World War Two the city was bombed several times resulting in widespread destruction and civilian casualties.
