Innsbruck’s strategic and economic importance continued throughout history, and the city has a proud Tyrolean heritage based on the city-state’s brave resistance to the imperial armies of Napoleon. Innsbruck was annexed by the Germans during World War Two and suffered extensive damage during allied bombing campaigns.
