The German national team, often nicknamed Die Nationalelf, has a history strewn with outstanding achievements since it started competing internationally in 1908. The German kit is supplied by Adidas AG, who has sponsored the team since 1954.
Germany has won three World Cups (1954, 1974 and 1990). They have also celebrated three UEFA European Football Championship victories (1972, 1980 and 1996). In addition to this, the East Germany team received a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics.
In the aftermath of World War II, Germany was prohibited from competing in international sporting events until almost the end of 1950. Germany was also divided into East Germany, West Germany and Saarland (which was controlled by West Germany from 1956). Each division of the country had a different football governing body.
Germany was finally reunified in 1990, although the side that was victorious in the World Cup for that year still did not include any players from the East German side. The first fixture that featured the recently assimilated German national team was played in December 1990 against Switzerland. Germany managed to progress to the final round in Euro 92, but were defeated 2 - 0 by Denmark. The national team was victorious in Euro 96 - their third UEFA European Championship Football trophy. This key title was also the first international triumph for the reunified Germany.
The German team is famous for their excellent penalty shoot-out skills. No German player has ever missed a penalty kick in a major tournament since 1982, so the Germany Euro 2008 Team has a reputation to uphold.
