Geneva is a relatively ancient European settlement. The name of the city is thought to be derived from the name of a Celtic tribe that occupied the territory prior to the Roman invasions. The inhabitants of the area were conquered by Julius Caesar in 58 BC, and thereafter the area was regarded as a part of the Roman Empire.

From the 16th century onwards Geneva was an important religious center in Europe. The city was the home of Christian reformer John Calvin, who secured Geneva as a safe-haven for protestants in Europe. The independent republic of Geneva was officially absorbed into the Swiss Federation in 1813.
