France Euro 2008 Team History and Overview

France national football team played their first international match in 1904 and entered their debut FIFA World Cup in 1930. They have featured in the final World Cup tournament a total of 12 times, including all three competitions before World War II.

France enjoyed their finest hour when they hosted and won the FIFA World Cup in 1998. The machine-like French team easily crushed all their opponents during the group matches. After narrowly beating Croatia and triumphing over Italy in a penalty shoot-out, France faced Brazil, the defending champions, in the final round. Approximately one million French football fans celebrated in the streets of Paris after the French team overwhelmed Brazil with a 3 – 0 victory.

In the final round of World Cup 2006, France was defeated by Italy in a penalty shoot-out.

France has won two UEFA European Football Championships. They were victorious for the first time at Euro 1980. With the help of their key player, Zinedine Zidane, the French took the cup home once again in 2000 when they beat Italy (2 – 1). Throughout their history, France has also earned numerous other awards. They have won three medals at the Summer Olympic Games - a bronze medal in 1920, a gold medal in 1984 and a silver medal in 1900. In addition, France won the Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003.
